What Does “Boro” (ボロ) Mean?

Boro (Japanese: ボロ) is a term from Japanese textile culture that literally means “rags” or “tattered cloth.” Originally used in a derogatory sense, the word has taken on a new and deeply respectful meaning today—especially in the context of sustainability, craftsmanship, and design.

Origin and Meaning

Historical Context:
Boro originated during Japan’s Edo period (1603–1868), when textiles were scarce and expensive. In poor rural regions, people couldn’t afford new garments, so they continuously mended and patched their clothing and bedding—often over several generations.

These repairs were both functional and artistic, involving layers of fabric scraps, hand stitching, and decorative reinforcement. One key technique used was Sashiko, a traditional Japanese embroidery method characterized by white thread on indigo-dyed fabric.

Today

Today, Boro is recognized as an art form. Many designers and artists around the world draw inspiration from it.

It stands for sustainability, mindfulness, reuse, and history. Every stitch tells a story of necessity, care, and resilience.
